Highland has been a leader in ultrasound training since 1993, when it was one of the first EM residencies to adopt emergency US into its curriculum. We offer courses for medical students, residents and fellows, as well as community emergency physicians. Highland is a leading center for ultrasound research. The earliest studies of ultrasound guided central line and peripheral line placement, focused echocardiography by emergency physicians, ultrasound assessment of DVT by emergency physicians, ultrasound-assisted abscess I&D, and ultrasound assessment of sinusitis were all conducted at Highland. With 4 ultrasound machines dedicated to the emergency department and a patient census of 70,000, we currently perform about 500 US exams each month in the Highland emergency department.
The faculty at Highland are among the pioneers of emergency ultrasound. They have edited or authored chapters in 2 of the 3 major textbooks in the field, as well as an upcoming textbook on ultrasound guided procedures.
