Ultrasound is taught in virtually all emergency medicine residency programs and is tested on the national board exam. Recent EM graduates are demanding access to ultrasound to provide optimal care to their patients. It is a fast and inexpensive way to facilitate diagnoses and treatment. Ultrasound is fast becoming an indispensable tool for health care practitioners in multiple specialties. Ultrasound guidance for procedures, such as for central line placement, is recommended by the Institute of Medicine, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and the British National Institute for Clinical Excellence.
